Santa Barbara City College is located along the US Pacific Coast in one of the most scenic areas of the world. Established in 1968, SBCC/MDT is the only community College in the nation that offers degrees and certifications in commercial diving and Marine Technology. As a state funded institution, SBCC offers training and education at significantly more affordable tuition rates vs. private schools. State residents can earn an A.S. degree and certifications in commercial diving and Marine Technology for less than $2,500.00 USD. International and out of state tuition is also very affordable. Located on 89 acres along the Pacific Ocean, training is conducted on offshore oil platforms, SBCC's offshore barge, as well as the college's fleet of vessels. SBCC maintains the most modern marine technician training facility in the US community college system with state-of-the art computer labs and an extensive inventory of diving equipment and remote operated vehicles.
A founder of the US Association of Commercial Diving Educators (ACDE), SBCC training exceeds the American National Standards Institute minimum requirements for commercial diver training. ANSI/ACDE-01-1998. SBCC's training philosophy is to train technicians- not just divers. The College certifies under ACDE, the Association of Diving Contractors (ADC) as well as the IDSA. Graduates work internationally as submersible pilot/technicians, hyperbaric technicians, ROV pilots, and saturation divers/marine technicians.
Additionally, SBCC offers full certification on a contract basis under the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) up to Instructor level. The College also provides customized employer-based training for industry and national entities such as, The United States Coast Guard, U.S. Department of Interior and others.
